Cancer 360


AYJ students who have an interest in healthcare will have the unique opportunity to participate in the online Cancer 360 certificate course (not for credit) on the topic of cancer care. The course was developed and is being generously offered (at no cost to students) by the Cancer Education Department of Princess Margaret Cancer Centre - UHN. The program will be delivered entirely online as 12 asynchronous sessions. Students can work through the course at their own pace and will earn a certificate upon completion.

The course is delivered using the following session formats:
  1. Recorded interactive lectures from the Princess Margaret Summer Student Learning Series
  2. eLearning modules and interactive online tools and videos
  3. Knowledge assessments

Topics covered:
  1. Intro to Cancer and Cancer Survivorship: This unit will introduce students to what cancer is, how cancer is treated, key issues facing cancer survivors, and innovative programming being developed for survivors. Students will gain an appreciation for the multifaceted issues facing cancer survivors, and how innovative healthcare programming can be achieved. 
  2. Quantitative Research Methods: This unit will introduce students to the concept, importance, and application of quantitative research in healthcare. Students will gain an appreciation for the role of quantitative research in healthcare and be better prepared to take on placements focused on quantitative research.
  3. Qualitative Research Methods: This unit will introduce students to the concept, importance, and application of qualitative research in healthcare. Students will gain an appreciation for the role of qualitative research in healthcare and be better prepared to take on placements focused on qualitative research.
  4. Essential Steps in Finding Best Practice: This unit will introduce students to the process of forming a research question, searching for relevant information, and steps for critically evaluating the information they find. Students will gain an appreciation for how information is evaluated and learn concrete steps to follow when searching for relevant and high quality information in post-secondary years.
  5. Introduction to Knowledge Translation: This unit will introduce students to the concept, importance, and application of knowledge translation principles in healthcare. Students will gain an appreciation from interactive examples about how knowledge translation from research to practice can be applied in any field.
  6. Smoking Cessation: This unit will introduce students to the implications of smoking and smoking cessation on cancer treatment and cancer outcomes from the perspective of a healthcare provider. Students will gain an appreciation of how smoking cessation plays a role in cancer care and how they can play a role as a future healthcare provider.
  7. Health Literacy and eHealth: This unit will introduce students to the concepts of health literacy and eHealth, the impact of health literacy for patients and healthcare providers, and strategies to promote health literacy. Students will gain an appreciation for the everyday relevance and importance of health literacy, and learn concrete steps they can take to contribute to health literacy as a future healthcare provider.
  8. Cancer Prevention: This unit will introduce students to cancer prevention strategies and their importance on the public health system from the perspective of Cancer Care Ontario, a health agency of the provincial government. Students will gain an appreciation for how prevention strategies play a role in the healthcare system, and what they can do to support these strategies as future healthcare providers.
  9. Indigenous Cancer Care: This unit will provide students with an introduction to key issues in Indigenous Cancer Care and context to appreciate Indigenous Relationships and Cultural Safety. Students will gain an appreciation for a new perspective on Indigenous Culture through a recorded discussion among 3 Indigenous healthcare providers.
  10. Music Therapy in Cancer Care: This unit will introduce students to the field of music therapy and how it is applied to patient care at Princess Margaret. Students will gain an appreciation of how music therapy complements all healthcare fields, and what music therapy means on a physical, mental, and social level.
  11. Global Cancer Care: This unit will introduce students to the concept and importance of global cancer care, and how it can be achieved. Students will gain an appreciate for the global scope of healthcare, and how all healthcare providers play a role in global care.
  12. Interprofessional Care: This unit will introduce students to the concept of Interprofessional Education and how it lays the foundation for Interprofessional Collaboration and Care. Students will gain an appreciation for how any healthcare role they enter will work with other professions to provide comprehensive health care. 

Students who are interested in participating in this summer certificate course need to:
  1. Go to Cancer Campus at pmcancercampus.ca.
  2. Click on Create a new account and complete the form using their email address (TDSB or any personal email address).
  3. Wait for the confirmation email and follow the instructions.
  4. Access the Cancer 360: TDSB course from the Cancer Campus homepage.
  5. Finish the Cancer 360 course by the end of June 2021.
  6. Send a picture of their certificate to biotech.shsm@gmail.com to receive a Reach Ahead stamp and an Elective stamp.
